6 top tips for nailing layering (so you don't look like Joey Tribbiani)

Cozy boys unite

Colder weather means it's time to up your layering game. Here's how to nail the layered look every time...

Remember a couple of months ago when it was boiling hot every day and needing anything other than your thinnest T-shirt and shortest shorts was as ludicrous as Dr Alex actually getting a girl to kiss him? Well sadly those days are long behind us.

If last winter's anything to go by, it's about to get really fucking cold, and the only way to survive (apart from staying in bed with the heating on - which is pretty tempting tbh) is to L A Y E R  U P.

If you don’t want to end up looking like Joey Tribbiani that time he wore all of Chandler's clothes, follow these simple rules for perfect layering...

1. Level(s) Up

The main goal with layering (aside from keeping warm obviously) is to create an interesting silhouette - bulky is not want you want tbh. When you're first staring out, a good rule of thumb is to start with longer layers at the bottom (such as a longline shirt or tee) and then add progressively shorter layers on top.

2. Invest in a long coat

A long coat is basically a layering secret weapon. You can chuck it over anything and it'll instantly look like you've put way more thought into your 'fit than you probably have. Also, you know, it'll keep you warm.

3. More is more

Ok, forget everything we said earlier about Joey T, because wearing a couple of hundred layers is kind of a vibe - when done right, that is. To avoid looking like the Michelin Man (i.e. bulky AF), take your inspo from our layering hero Jean Jacques (above) or this insanely expensive Balenciaga coat.

4. Clash it

If you don’t like to look too coordinated, wearing an outfit made up of clashing colours and patterns is another great way to make your layers pop and add texture to your 'fit - as expertly demonstrated here by the ever-stylish Luka Sabbat

5. Tone it up

For a more low-key look, pick a colour and go to town with it by layering up different shades. There are some really nice colours around this season - including bright blues, oranges and earthy greens - so pick your poison and have some fun with it.

6. It's all in the details

As with every aspect of fashion, accessorising is key. Scarves, beanies, hip bags (worn over or underneath a coat, the choice is yours), tote bags, snoods, umbrellas and even water bottle carriers can all help to bring your outfit together and create those precious extra layers without adding bulk.
