Classic lazy girl outfits that literally always work (even when you don’t)

You're welcome.

Even if you love fashion forever and ever amen, weigh up your wardrobe options the night before and just aren’t satisfied with an outfit unless it’s officially A Look™, getting dressed can still be a major effort.

Unfortunately, Cher’s outfit-planning computer from Clueless still hasn’t been invented yet (it’s 2018 science guys, get a move on), so we all must face with those days when you just have to throw your hands up and declare that you have nothing to wear. Usually while surrounded by a mountain-sized floordrobe.

Things get considerably worse on days when workload stress, an overly emotional hangover or period-based mood swings are involved. But hold up for a second, step away from the sweatpants and drop that pair of leggings with the hole in the crotch – that’s where this lot come in.

Yes, there are a few combos out there that are pretty much guaranteed to never fail you on the style front. Here are 11 classic outfits for the quintessential lazy gal (or guy) which will literally always work – even when you don’t.

1.Black tee + blue jeans

For that enviable cooler-than-cool vibe, the only two items you really need to rely on are the humble (preferably crisply ironed if you’ve got your life together) tee and a pair of well-fitting, basic jeans. Flared, cropped, skinny or mom style, everyone needs those favourite jeans that make your bum look peachy and your attitude look effortless. Tuck in, chill out.

2. Slouchy top + dungarees

Once you get past the fact that you’ve basically recreated the exact outfit that you wore to your 4th birthday party, dungarees will quickly become your one true love for Don't Know What To Wear occasions. Overalls are the ultimate in comfy casuals but still look on-trend, and they have the added bonus of convincing everyone that you’re really into art in your spare time. Plus, any item of clothing that halves the amount of pieces that you have to think about when getting dressed has got to be a winner.

3. A shirt dress

Perfect for those days when all you want to do is chuck something easy on and leave the house pronto, a shirt dress has more than got you covered. They look seriously chic but never try-hard, and will take you from serial pyjama-dweller to serious girlboss in just a matter of seconds. A particularly strong choice when styled with the right accessories like statement earrings or androgynous loafers, one in every colour is probably a good idea to improve your quality of life.

4. That floral summer dress

We all have one - that one, magical dress that you slip on as soon as the sunshine appears. It makes you think of picnic blankets, mid-morning ice lollies, the smell of sun cream and tan-lined shoulders. As long as it’s warm enough, it’s a no brainer – dress, sandals, sunnies, Solero, sorted – but your failsafe summer dress might also look brilliant right now, with a poloneck, a shirt or a long sleeved tee underneath. No guarantees, but worth a try.

5. Slouchy knitwear + denim

On those days when you’re in a serious relationship with your duvet, the thought of anything less than maximum comfort is just not an option. That’s where the slouchy knitwear comes in for reliable warmth, cosiness and style versatility. Wear your choice of knit with jeans, a denim skirt, layered under a jumpsuit or even just big and baggy over thick tights to become one walking woolly cloud.

6. Statement print + block colours

A wardrobe full of reliable basics definitely does not have to be boring (just ask any model ever), but make sure there’s at least one item of bold and beautiful print in the mix that you can reach for whenever the mood takes you. You’ll find it’s surprisingly versatile, letting you switch up your usual block colour for something slightly more exciting, or to go all out with clashing prints. If you don’t know where to freakin’ start with this one, one single item of animal print (leopard print skirt? YAS) is your new BFF.

7. 90s pieces x 3

Yep, the fashion world is still obsessed with the 90s and yep we’re totally ok with that. While the Spice Girls' next comeback still hangs in the balance, every 90s kid's wardrobe has returned with a vengeance. Be the rebel next door that everyone wanted to be in '96 by pairing your oversized graphic tee with a long-sleeved top underneath, and layering with another grunge essential: slashed-sleeve denim. Maybe not the easiest of looks to have as your failsafe, but definitely the most IDGAF.

8. Black + white

Every so often we all wake up with a black cloud over our heads, so it’s only right to reflect the colour of our mood in our outfit. B&W basics are fuss-free, minimalist, and the only combo you need to make it look like you know what you’re doing. Black jeans are a great place to start, while white shirts, jackets or tees all work really well for day or night. The finishing touch is a pop of red lipstick to show that you mean business - even if you forgot to find matching socks.

9. A great slogan tee + literally anything

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that anyone who has no clue what to wear in the morning should reach for ol’ faithful, the slogan t-shirt. It really does speak for itself. Whether it’s something sassy, subtle or statement, a slogan tee can do all the talking so the rest of your outfit can stay schtum. Whatever you have that could pass for clean (skinny jeans, a button-up skirt, high-waisted trousers, whatever), pair it with your t-shirt to look like you absolutely didn’t just wake up less than six minutes ago.

10. Athleisure + more athleisure

Who doesn’t love an outfit that makes everybody think you’re heading to the gym when you’re actually on a snack mission to the corner shop? From head to toe, the athleisure/sports luxe look will see you right when you don’t know what reach for. Special shout outs deservedly go to the vintage track jacket for retro vibes, the essential white trainer as the casual forever basic, and the contrast trim tracksuit bottoms which are somehow stylish again now. God bless whoever made that call.

11. Just a damn great coat

And last but not least, if all else fails then you just need one thing – your favourite statement coat, to cover up the rest of the outfit that you failed to put together today. Something longline, neutral and oversized always looks mature and sophisticated while also being great at hiding your freshers t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms combo. You’ll look low-key glam and classically stylish, and may even go as far as to convince everyone that you’re an actual, functioning human being. SNEAKY.
