PSA: Skechers are cool again (yes really)

We didn't see this coming...

Skechers have gone from kiddy kicks to a streetwear staple, but how did this all happen? We spoke to the sneakerheads who are making Sketchers cool...

Love them or hate them (and I'm definitely in the second camp – especially when it comes to the Balenciaga Triple S), chunky trainers have been fashion’s biggest footwear trend of the past few seasons.

But aside from Louis Vuitton’s Archlights (seriously, WHAT is going on with them?!), by far the strangest thing that’s come out of fashion's love for all things orthopedic-esque, is that Skechers have become cool. Yep, Skechers – a shoe brand you probably last lusted after when you were in primary school – is now being repped by some of the best dressed people on Instagram.

Obviously not every pair Skechers is worthy of Instagram glory (we really don’t see these taking off tbh), but the D’Lites - with their chunky soles and generally geeky vibe – fit the current trainer aesthetic perfectly.

"I like them because of the shape. I think they are super cool, especially the ones with glitter, and they always look good on foot," confirmed 24-year-old Madrid-based choreographer, dancer and D’Lite fan, Maiyuu.

The nostalgia factor has also undoubtedly played a part in D’Lites’ sudden popularity (after all, most of the people wearing them now will remember Skechers’ noughties ad campaigns featuring the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) .

"I love that Skechers D’Lites have been reintroduced into fashion in a modern way,” Rebecca Ramsdale, a beauty vlogger and sneaker collector from Canada, told us.

“They’re still the comfortable, affordable shoe that us kids of the 90’s grew up loving on our favourite pop stars, but now they’re an accessible way to try out the chunky shoe trend."

So we’ve got style and nostalgia, but the clincher is undoubtedly D’Lites’ pocket-friendly price point - something confirmed by Singapore-based model/ dancer/ sneakerhead Joel Layno, who explained: "I chose D’lites over the other chunky shoes on the market mainly because they are stylish and comfy but most important they're budget friendly!"

Budget friendly is an understatement. While a pair of Balenciaga Triple S’s will set you back a small fortune (£615 to be precise), a pair of D'Lites start at £45.

We’re sold.
