Student Voices: Is the Royal Family still relevant in 2018?

Students at UAL have their say...

The royal family are all over the news... but do we care? UAL students have their say...

What with the birth of Kate and Will's third child (His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge) and Harry and Meghan's up-coming wedding, you haven't been able to pick up a paper/ turn on the TV/ listen to the radio/ eat a Subway (OK, the last one might be a slight exaggeration) recently without coming into contact with a member of the British royal family.

But is the monarchy still relevant in 2018? We headed down to University of Arts London's Kings Cross campus to hear what students have to say...

Zoe, Industrial Design

"From my perspective, it seems a bit stupid to have this family who get so much that they don't necessarily deserve. I feel like all the money could be invested in social care and things like that. I understand the concept of keeping the status but it's out of date and I don't understand why people invest the money."

Matthew, Contemporary Media Cultures

"I don't hold any personal grudges against them, but it just seems so unnecessary - they're like a relic from the past."

Nic, Performance Design

"I would say the monarchy is outdated, although I guess they bring in a lot of revenue. I would say there isn't really a place for them in society anymore. I think the taxes could be spent better."

Hannah, Fashion

"I don't really care about the monarchy, I think they're living off the state."

Emily, Architecture

"Looking at Monarchies from the past, they've all been pretty terrible, but it seems more democratic in the UK. The Queen is more of a British symbol."

Tarun,  3D Design

"The monarchy is outdated and archaic in my opinion, it's not fair how they get given so much money from the government and tax payers. They could easily put that money into something else. I have a problem with the whole system."

Steven, Architecture

"I find it all pretty interesting to be honest, especially how the Queen came to power and how she learnt to rule and stuff like that. I think she's really important for tourism, especially in London."

Eduardo, Fashion

"I actually like the monarchy, which is maybe a contradiction because back home in Brazil I vote very left wing, but I like the image of the queen."

Blanca, Architecture

"I think they're cool. I think it's nice that your country has something like this, as back home in Poland we don't really have anything like the monarchy. I actually collect all the commemorative plates and stuff like that so I'm quite into the whole thing"

Susannah, Fine Art

"I think they're very outdated and the fact that so much money is put into things like the royal wedding or renovating Buckingham Palace when so many people in this country are living in poverty is an insult to them. I understand they're part of British heritage but nostalgia isn't a reason to keep the outdated system going."

Efa, Industrial Design

"I understand the symbolism, I think they're like an ode to the British Empire or something. To be honest, I'm quite indifferent, but I understand their importance for tourists and stuff."

Marley, 3D Design

"The monarchy is more ingrained in British culture than we care to admit. Sometimes I like the whole Britishness of it, but sometimes it's really fucking annoying."
