Wetherspoons have quit social media for the weirdest reason

Wetherspoons have announced they're closing their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts...

So, it turns out Wetherspoons is that friend who believes social media is the route of all evil.

In a surprising move, the chain - which has 900 pubs across the UK - has decided to call time on social media, shutting down all their accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

As if this move - which goes totally against all standard business thinking - wasn't mind-boggling enough, their reasoning is even more confusing.

A JD Wetherspoon spokesman told Sky News: "We've noticed a lot of MPs get trolled and some receive some nasty comments and the company doesn't like what's going on - we don't like the general climate of social media."

Meanwhile Wetherspoon chairman, Tim Martin, added: "We are going against conventional wisdom that these platforms are a vital component of a successful business.

"I don't believe that closing these accounts will affect our business whatsoever, and this is the overwhelming view of our pub managers.

"It's becoming increasingly obvious that people spend too much time on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, and struggle to control the compulsion."

But it's not all bad news though.

Although you'll no longer be able to drunkenly troll your local Spoons about the state of their loos, Tim Martin confirmed the Wetherspoon app will live on - so you'll still be able to send you mates pints of milk and fried eggs just for LOLs.

Do you think Wetherspoon have done the right thing by quitting social media? Let us know over on Facebook and Twitter (if you haven't quit social too, that is!)
